How We Met

A Note to the Reader
Someday perhaps Andrew will add a few details, but for now, you'll have to trust Dana's account of the events.

Crossing Paths
Though Andrew and I were both in the band together in college, we ran in different circles and despite being acquaintances, we didn't really know each other that well until what was my Junior year and his fifth year in college. However, when I look back now on my time in the band and consider it, I am intrigued to see where and how often Andrew and I crossed paths.

Old Chicago and Andrew's 21st Birthday
Andrew's 21st birthday: Dana is seated second from the left; Andrew is directly across on the right.
When I was a freshman, Nicole, one of my best friends and a current Maid of Honor, had a crush on a boy in the trombone section. She desperately wanted to get the chance to hang out with him more than we normally would at practice. It just so happened that Andrew's birthday was coming up and he would be having dinner at Old Chicago before we all went to a band party later that night. Nicole was friends with Andrew and asked me to go with her to dinner because she knew this boy would be there and she wanted some support. So, I reluctantly went. Andrew was dating another girl at the time and I wasn't really there for him, but oddly enough, I am in the background of the pictures from his 21st birthday.

Lafayette, Here We Come
Fast-forward to two years later, because there isn't much to say about the intervening time except that we both continued to play in the band. After living on "The Hill" (the VERY college-esque part of Boulder) for a year, I was ready to be away from college students. Another friend from the band and I went looking for apartments to rent and found a great place out in Lafayette, which is about 15 minutes east of Boulder. The condo was perfect: great place, great price, etc. The only problem was, it had three bedrooms and there were only two of us. Undaunted, I sent an email to the band asking for a third roommate. When Andrew first responded, I sent back a message to say that we had received a lot of replies and that we would have to see how things worked out.

Moving In
Actually, Andrew was the only one who responded. I was unsure whether my parents would be all right with me living with a boy, and since I didn't really know a lot about Andrew, I had lied about the number of responses. I know, I'm a bad liar. After I got the okay from my parents, Andrew was allowed to move into the basement. Both he and I were dating other people at the time and he was so deep into his senior project that he was hardly ever home. We pretty much ignored each other for about six or seven months.

Dating
Ah, college... A summer kegger in 2002.
Andrew and his girlfriend parted ways in October, and by the time late February rolled around, I was single as well. Since we were both having trouble dealing with our third roommate's boyfriend who had permanently taken up residence on our couch, we starting hanging out more and more and commiserating about our third (and fourth) roommates. We were both pretty busy until May when school was out, but then over the summer, we both found ourselves with little to do and spent a lot of time together. By the end of June when Andrew moved out of the house and back into Boulder, we were spending so much time together that we were basically dating. We didn't admit this to ourselves until August 24th, 2002, but ever since then, we've been together. Everything else is...well...history.

Wine and Jazz Festival
Early-afternoon at the Keystone wine and jazz festival, August 2005: Enjoying a tasting of six Italian, non-Tuscan, wines.
Later that afternoon, toasting to a wonderful day among friends.
